These are the terms the docs and the app use for parts of EtherPK, grouped by area and sorted alphabetically.

Graphs and storage

browser storage	The data EtherPK keeps in one browser on one device, which no other browser or device can see.	Where Your Data Is Stored
demo graph	A sample graph for trying the editor without an account. It is kept only in this browser and is never backed up.	Choosing Where To Store Your Notes
graph	The journal entries, pages and files EtherPK opens together. A graph is either local or synced from the start, so importing is the only way to move notes from one kind to the other.	Choosing Where To Store Your Notes
graph folder	One graph as plain files in journals/, pages/, assets/ and etherpk/. Local Mirrors and export zips use the same layout, and Import reads it.	Graph Folder Layout
Graphs page	The page that lists every graph in this browser, where you create and manage them.	Managing Your Graphs
installed app	EtherPK in its own window, started from an icon. Firefox on macOS or Linux cannot install it.	Installing EtherPK As An App
local graph	A folder of Markdown files on your device, with no account or server. It is the only copy of your notes, so backups are up to you.	Local Graphs
synced graph	A graph that Managed Sync keeps encrypted. You can open it on each of your devices and share it with Players. You need Sync+ to own one.	Synced Graphs

Writing

block	A bullet line and everything under it, such as child bullets or code.	Outliner Blocks
concept	Any name in the graph: a page, a journal day, or a linked name with no page yet.	Pages And Wikilinks
document	A journal entry or a page.	Pages And Wikilinks
draft	The empty page for a name or day that has no document. Nothing is written until you type, so opening a link or a day creates nothing.	Pages And Wikilinks
graph dictionary	Extra words that spell check accepts in one graph. The list is the same for every member.	Spell Check
journal entry	The document for one day, named by its date, such as 2026-09-21.	Journal Entries
journal roll	Earlier journal entries that open one below another under a journal entry as you scroll.	Journal Entries
Journal Template	The Template chosen in graph settings. Each new day from today onward starts with it as a draft.	Templates
link menu	The menu of actions for one link, which you open by right-clicking or long-pressing it.	Pages And Wikilinks
page	A document with a name you choose.	Pages And Wikilinks
pageless concept	A name that wikilinks use but that has no page yet.	The Graph View
quick note	Text you write down without choosing a page. It waits in Quick notes and is not a document, so Search and links cannot reach it until you move it into today's journal entry.	Quick Notes
suggestion list	The list of matching names that opens when you type [[.	Pages And Wikilinks
Template	A page marked template: true that you copy into documents, with variables such as {{date}} filled in.	Templates
wikilink	A name in double square brackets, such as [[Garden]], that opens the document with that name. Because it points at a name, a link can exist before its page does.	Pages And Wikilinks

Organising a graph

Term	Meaning	Page
alias	Another name for a page, listed under aliases: in its frontmatter.	Titles Aliases And Frontmatter
frontmatter	The key: value settings at the top of a document, between two --- lines.	Titles Aliases And Frontmatter
import	Converting a folder or zip of notes into a new EtherPK graph.	Importing A Knowledge Base
Import Report	The page an import writes, which lists what it changed, dropped or kept as text.	Importing A Knowledge Base
scope	The ordinary wikilink inside a scoped concept, such as [[Garden]] in [[[[Garden]] Tools]]. It needs no page.	Scoped Concepts
scoped concept	A name with a wikilink inside it, such as [[[[Garden]] Tools]]. It has a page of its own.	Scoped Concepts
title	A page's name, set by the title key in its frontmatter.	Titles Aliases And Frontmatter

Tasks and boards

Term	Meaning	Page
free tag	A # followed by a word of your own on a task line, such as #bug. It sets no state.	Tasks
Graph Kanban	A Kanban board of every task in the graph.	Kanban Boards
Kanban board	One concept's tasks as cards in lanes. It keeps no copy of them, so a card moves whenever its task line changes.	Kanban Boards
lane	A column of a Kanban board for one task status, split by priority.	Kanban Boards
lane reference	The address of one lane of a Kanban board inside an agent instruction. It gives no access on its own.	Kanban Boards
task	A Markdown bullet with a checkbox, - [ ] or - [x], in the document it belongs to.	Tasks
Task Detail	The editor below a board's lanes that opens a card's document at its task line.	Kanban Boards
task reference	The address of one task inside an agent instruction. It gives no access on its own.	Tasks
task tag	A tag straight after the checkbox, such as #P1 or #W, that sets a priority, a state or a date. The checkbox and the state tag together give the task its status.	Tasks
Tasks view	Every task in the graph in one list, where each row is a task line in a document.	The Tasks View

Rich content

asset	An image or other file stored with the graph and linked from a document.	Images And Files
fenced block	The lines between two matching runs of three or more backticks, kept exactly as typed.	Code Maths And Diagrams
Graph Map	The Map View of the whole graph.	Maps
language word	The word after the opening backticks, such as math, that sets how a fenced block is shown.	Code Maths And Diagrams
map	A map code block whose lines are places and routes, drawn over a background map.	Maps
map host	The EtherPK server that sends background maps and UK and US postcode files.	Maps
Map View	One concept's places and routes on one map, with a list beside it.	Maps
place	A named point, written on one line as the name, @, then latitude and longitude.	Maps
route	A named line through two or more points joined by >.	Maps

Finding things

backlink	A wikilink in another document that names this one, shown under this document and in the Backlinks panel.	Backlinks
bookmark	A mark on one line of a document, listed under Bookmarks in the Graph Sidebar.	Bookmarks
favourite	A whole document or view pinned under Favourites in the Graph Sidebar. A bookmark marks one line instead.	The Graph Sidebar
find and replace	Finding and replacing text in the document in front.	Find And Replace
Graph Sidebar	The first tab of the left sidebar, or the left drawer in the phone layout, with Search, Favourites, Bookmarks and Recents.	The Graph Sidebar
Graph View	A picture of the graph, with a dot for each concept and one line between two concepts when either links to the other.	The Graph View
property filter	A key:value term in Search that narrows results to documents with that frontmatter property.	Search
Recents	The documents opened recently on this device. The list is never synced.	The Graph Sidebar
reference	A backlinks entry that shows the bullet, paragraph or heading where a link sits.	Backlinks
Search	The dialog that finds documents in the open graph by name or text.	Search
search index	The index EtherPK builds on this device for Search, backlinks, the Tasks view and Kanban boards. It never holds protected text, so none of them show it.	Search
sync status	The row at the foot of the Graph Sidebar that shows whether your edits have reached the Sync Server.	The Graph Sidebar

The workspace

command bar	A row of editor buttons at the foot of the screen in the phone layout.	EtherPK On A Phone
command menu	The menu of commands that opens when you type /.	Keyboard Shortcuts
device setting	A setting kept only in this browser. It is never synced or exported.	Graph Settings
drawer	A panel over the document that takes the place of a sidebar in the phone layout.	EtherPK On A Phone
extension	A package of features that runs inside EtherPK, such as the built-in Kanban and Maps. Extensions belong to you, so sharing a graph does not share them.	Extensions
Extension Directory	Extensions from other publishers that you can install.	Extensions
graph setting	A setting kept in the graph itself. It is the same for every member.	Graph Settings
keyboard shortcuts card	The card that lists every key EtherPK uses.	Keyboard Shortcuts
main area	The middle of the window in the desktop layout, where documents open in panes.	Tabs And Panes
pane	A box with its own row of tabs. Each device keeps its own pane arrangement for each graph.	Tabs And Panes
phone layout	The layout for windows narrower than 1024 px, which shows one document at a time. Wider windows get the desktop layout.	EtherPK On A Phone
Settings	The dialog for the open graph, titled Settings and Extensions.	Graph Settings
sidebar	The pane at each side of the main area in the desktop layout.	Tabs And Panes
top bar	The row across the top in the phone layout, with the document's name and the drawer, Search and today buttons.	EtherPK On A Phone

Sync and sharing

device approval	Unlocking your Encryption Keys on a new device from one that is already unlocked, after you compare a code on both.	Recovery Code And Device Approval
device passcode	An optional passcode that encrypts the Encryption Keys stored on one device. It protects only those keys, so copies of synced graphs on the device stay readable without it.	Device Passcode
Encryption Keys	The keys that decrypt your synced graphs, sealed on the Sync Server. You unlock them once per device, with device approval or the Recovery Code.	Recovery Code And Device Approval
EtherPK Account	Your one sign-in for EtherPK, which proves who you are. Signing in decrypts nothing, so a password reset leaves your notes and Encryption Keys as they were.	Your EtherPK Account
export	A one-off zip of a synced graph's documents, files and settings, which you can make in any browser.	Keeping A Local Copy Of A Synced Graph
Free plan	The plan every new account starts on, which is enough to join shared graphs. You need Sync+ to own a synced graph.	Your EtherPK Account
Graph Key	The key a graph is encrypted with. Every member holds it, so every Player can read the whole graph.	Sharing A Graph
invite	The owner's signed request for another account to join a shared graph as a Player. It carries the Graph Key.	Sharing A Graph
Local Mirror	A plain Markdown copy of a synced graph in a folder on one device. EtherPK never reads the folder back, so edits there never reach the graph.	Keeping A Local Copy Of A Synced Graph
Managed Sync	The Sync Server that EtherPK runs. You reach it by signing in with your EtherPK Account.	Synced Graphs
owner	The account that holds a shared graph and decides who joins. A graph's members are its owner and its Players.	Sharing A Graph
Player	A person invited into someone else's synced graph, who can read and edit all of it. Players count against the owner's Sync+ plan, so they need an EtherPK Account but not Sync+.	Sharing A Graph
Recovery Code	The code that unlocks your Encryption Keys when no other device can approve. If you lose it and every unlocked device, nobody can decrypt your notes, EtherPK included.	Recovery Code And Device Approval
Replace Encryption Keys	New Encryption Keys and a new Recovery Code, for when yours might have been copied. Your other devices are locked out until you unlock them again, and each graph you own gets a new Graph Key.	Recovery Code And Device Approval
Reset Encryption Keys	Permanently deleting your Encryption Keys and the graphs you own. It is the last resort when you have lost the Recovery Code and every unlocked device.	Recovery Code And Device Approval
Rotate key	The owner's action that gives a graph a new Graph Key at once. Members receive the new key automatically.	Sharing A Graph
security fingerprint	A short code made from a person's public keys. You compare it with that person before you send or accept an invite.	Sharing A Graph
shared graph	A synced graph that more than one EtherPK Account opens and edits at the same time.	Sharing A Graph
Sync Server	Managed Sync, the server that stores synced graphs. It never holds documents or graph names in plain text.	Synced Graphs
Sync+	The paid subscription you need to own synced graphs.	Your EtherPK Account
Verified / Unverified / Key changed	Labels for a person whose fingerprint you confirmed, a person whose fingerprint you never compared, and a person whose key changed. While Key changed shows, the next Graph Key is held back until the owner selects Verify.	Sharing A Graph
working copy	A copy of a synced graph in each browser that uses it, for opening quickly and working offline.	Synced Graphs

Privacy

Term	Meaning	Page
hidden	A protected document off screen while you work in another document, tab or window. Its protection key stays in memory.	Protected Documents
locked	A protected document whose protection key is no longer in memory. It needs the passphrase again, or a passkey you bound in this browser.	Protected Documents
protected document	A page whose text EtherPK encrypts on your device. Players can read the rest of a shared graph, so protecting a page is the way to keep it from them.	Protected Documents
protection key	A random key, one for each person in each graph, that encrypts the pages you protect. It is not one of the Encryption Keys, so the Recovery Code cannot open those pages.	Protected Documents
protection passphrase	The passphrase that unlocks your protection key in one graph. Neither EtherPK nor the Recovery Code can recover a forgotten one.	Protected Documents
security key	Your key pair for invites, also called the identity keys. It is part of your Encryption Keys.	How Encryption Works
Settings Vault	A sealed record in your account for settings that follow you between devices, such as extensions.	How Encryption Works

Publishing

include	A page whose body fills an include slot, such as the footer. It is never a page of its own.	Publish Settings
public document	A document with public: true in its frontmatter. For a publication that takes named documents, it also needs that publication's id under publications.	Publish Settings
publication	One website built from a set of public documents.	Publishing Your Notes As A Website
publication page	The page whose frontmatter holds a publication's settings and whose outline is the site's menu.	Publish Settings
publish report	The report of a finished publish, with its warnings and the documents left out.	Publish Settings
published site	The folder of plain files EtherPK builds, with HTML pages, a stylesheet, a search index and images.	Hosting A Published Site
slug	A page's address on the published site, set with the slug: key.	Publish Settings
theme	The templates, stylesheet and scripts that set a published site's look.	Theming A Published Site

AI agents

Term	Meaning	Page
Agent Chat	The extension that lets you ask a language model about your notes, in a chat inside a document. The model never changes them.	Agent Chat
agent instruction	Text you copy from a task or a Kanban lane to hand it to an AI agent. It says how to reach the graph and gives no access on its own.	Tasks
Agent Setup Code	A one-time code from Settings that the Headless Client trades for an agent token.	The Headless Client
agent skill	The etherpk skill that teaches an AI coding agent to write and publish a graph folder.	Using AI Agents With Your Notes
agent token	The Headless Client's own token, which can do less than your account and never reads the Settings Vault.	The Headless Client
chat instruction	A single text sent to every model in every chat, ahead of your notes.	Agent Chat
Context setting	What a chat sends to the provider with each question, from Nothing else to The whole graph.	Agent Chat
Headless Client	EtherPK without an editor, started with npx on your agent's device. It gives the agent one graph as MCP tools.	The Headless Client
MCP	The protocol that AI agents use to call tools.	The Headless Client
model connection	A model provider, set up with your own key or server, and the model that new chats start on.	Agent Chat
search by meaning	A Headless Client search that finds notes by meaning, even when no words match.	The Headless Client
