Spell Check

EtherPK checks your spelling as you write. A misspelt word gets a wavy red underline, and its menu offers corrections. Nothing changes in your text unless you pick one. Checking happens on your device: your notes are never sent anywhere to be checked.

Fix a misspelt word

Right-click the underlined word, or put the cursor in it and press Shift+F10 (or the Menu key). On a phone, tap into the word and use Fix spelling on the command bar. The menu has:

• up to five corrections - choosing one replaces the word, and Ctrl+Z puts it back
• Add "word" to the graph dictionary, for a name or term that is spelt the way you mean it
• Spelling languages…, which opens the Spelling tab of Graph Settings.

Checking starts with your first change in a document's tab, so a document you open only to read shows no underlines. From then on the whole document is checked, the text that was already there included. Close the tab and open the document again, or reload the page, and it waits for a change again. On a phone, so does switching to another tab and back.

A word you are still typing is left alone. It is checked once the cursor moves off it, however it moves: a space, Enter, an arrow key or a click.

Languages

Each graph is checked in one or more languages, and a word is correct if any of them accepts it, so notes that mix two languages work. At first a graph uses your browser's own languages, where EtherPK has a dictionary for them. To change them, open Settings → Spelling, or type /spelling in the editor and choose Spelling languages:

• Add language picks from every language EtherPK has a dictionary for, with its download size.
• Remove takes one away.
• Go back to my browser's languages undoes your changes.

The choice belongs to the graph on this device, so a laptop and a phone can check the same graph in different languages, and so can two people sharing it.

Each dictionary downloads the first time a graph needs it, from dictionaries.etherpk.com, and then stays on your device, so spell checking works offline. Nothing is underlined until every one of the graph's languages has arrived - with German still on its way, every German word would otherwise look wrong. A download that fails says so, with a Retry. A language uses about 20 to 50 MB of memory while you are in the graph - on a phone, more than three may slow it down.

The graph dictionary

Words you add go into the graph's own dictionary, which is shared with everyone in the graph: a colleague's name added by one person is accepted for all of them. See and remove its words in Settings → Spelling. In a folder graph the words are the file etherpk/dictionary.txt, one per line (Graph Folder Layout).

A word is kept as you wrote it, with the usual rule for capitals: kubernetes also accepts Kubernetes at the start of a sentence, but Gareth does not accept gareth.

What is not checked

Only your writing is checked: paragraphs, bullets, headings, quotes, table cells, a link's text, an image's description and a task's text. These are left alone:

• code blocks and inline code
• wikilinks (a misspelt page name is fixed by renaming the page, Pages And Wikilinks)
• web addresses, file links and a link's target
• an image's size hint and its path, and links to attached files
• a task's tags, such as #P1
• maths between $ signs, and the frontmatter at the top of a page
• words in capitals (PKMS), with a capital inside (iPhone), or with a digit (v2)
• the Quick Notes box
• Protected Documents, even while unlocked, so none of their words can reach the shared graph dictionary.

Turn it off or on

Press Alt+S, type /spell and choose Spell check: turn off (or turn on), or use the checkbox in Settings → Spelling. The setting belongs to this device and applies to every graph on it.
