The Graph Sidebar
The Graph tab of the left sidebar is where you reach things by name and by day: Quick Find, today's journal, the calendar, the protection control, your favourites, your recents, and the list of every document. Alt+G brings it to the front from anywhere; on a phone it is the first tab of the left drawer.
Every row opens its document the same way whether or not the document exists yet. A favourite whose page has been deleted, or a day nobody has written on, opens as a draft that becomes a document only when you type into it (Pages And Wikilinks).
Quick Find
The box at the top of the tab. Start typing and it offers matching documents as you go, up to twelve. It matches names only, and it is forgiving about how you type them:
- Case does not matter.
physicsfinds Physics. - Any part of the name works, not only the start.
mechfinds Quantum Mechanics. - Aliases count. If a page is also known as QM, typing
qmfinds it, shown as→ Quantum Mechanics, and opens the page it belongs to. - Scoped names read as plain words. A page called
[[Physics]] Quantum Mechanicsis found by typingphysics quantum; you never type the brackets. - A name you have linked to but never written a page for is offered too, marked with how many notes mention it.
Exact matches come first, then names that start with what you typed, then names that contain it. Up and Down move through the list, Enter opens the highlighted row, and Escape clears the box. If nothing matches, the last row offers + New page with the name you typed; choosing it opens a draft, so a typo costs nothing. A protected document's row shows a padlock.
With an empty box the list shows nothing. Browsing is what All documents is for.
Quick Find matches names, not text inside notes. For that, select Search everything under the box (or press Alt+F): what you typed comes across with you. See Search.
Today's journal
Today's journal opens the entry for today, worked out at the moment you press it, so a tab left open overnight reaches the new day. If today has no entry yet you get a draft. Alt+J does the same from anywhere. See Journal Entries.
The calendar
Under today's journal, a month grid walks your journal by day. Every day of the month is there whether or not anything was written on it. Days that have an entry are shown in bold, today is in the accent colour, and Monday starts the week.
- Select a day to open it. A day with nothing on it opens as a draft; browsing creates nothing.
- The arrows page by month. Select the month's name for a grid of the year, then a month to return to its days.
- The calendar follows the document you are reading whenever that document is a journal entry, so the month on screen is the month being read. Opening a page moves nothing.
- On the keyboard, the arrows move by day and week, Page Up and Page Down by month, Home and End to the ends of the week, and Enter opens the day.
The Calendar heading collapses and expands the grid.
Protected documents
Once a graph has a protection passphrase, a Protected documents section holds one button for the whole graph: Lock now while you are unlocked, Unlock while you are locked. See Protected Documents.
Favourites
Favourites are the documents you pin for one-click return. Right-click a document's tab, or a row in Favourites, Recents or All documents (long-press on a phone), and choose Add to favourites or Remove from favourites. The ⋯ button on a row opens the same menu.
A new favourite goes to the top. To reorder, drag the grip at the right edge of a row, or focus the grip and use Up, Down, Home and End. Nothing is written until you let go, and Escape abandons a drag.
Favourites belong to the graph, not to the device. They sync to every device, and every member of a shared graph sees and edits the same list, so one person removing a favourite removes it for everyone. They travel in a Local Mirror. A favourite whose document has been deleted stays on the list and opens as a draft.
Recents
Recents lists the documents most recently opened on this device, newest first, one row per document. A document joins the list when it becomes the active document in the main region; today's journal takes a slot like anything else. Deleting a document removes its row.
Recents are per device. They never sync and they are not part of the graph, so one member's browsing never reorders another's. How many are shown is a graph setting, Recent documents shown in the sidebar (Graph Settings), 10 unless changed. Protected documents never appear here: Recents is a trail of what you have been reading, and that is not something a glance at the drawer should give away.
All documents
The All documents button at the foot of the tab, with the document count beside it, opens a list of every document in the graph as a tab in the main region. A Filter by name… box narrows it with the same matching Quick Find uses. Each row shows whether it is a journal entry or a page; select one to open it, or right-click for the document menu.
Reach for it when you have neither a name nor a word in mind. It is a tab you can leave open beside your work rather than a box that closes when you pick a result.
Settings and Reset workspace
On a phone, a Settings row opens the graph's settings (on a desktop the cog in the toolbar does). Reset workspace closes every tab and puts the sidebars back as a new graph opens with, after asking; see Tabs And Panes.
Quick notes
The second tab of the same sidebar, Quick notes, is a scratch list for thoughts that have nowhere to go yet. See Quick Notes.
